There are 3 major elements that must guide good web page design.
1- The need of the visitor to the site.
What is the visitor looking for when a specific keyword is entered? Are
the answers there? Are the answers complete? Remember that this is
the information superhighway; people get on it for
"super-information"! Is
there research backing up the content? Is it up to date?
2- The attention span of the visitor.
How long is a visitor willing to wait for a page to load? Is the
information easily accessible? Is the text neatly separated from
cluttering graphics and advertisements? Does the writing flow from one paragraph
to the other? Is the font appropriate for the size of the letters?
Is the language and grammar appropriate for the subject being discussed?
Is the spelling accurate?
3- The way search engines crawl the page.
This is what search engine optimization is about: web page design in order
to facilitate indexing and securing a high ranking by those search engines. For
this, the web page developer must drop on the robot's path seeds that feed the
robot's hunger for "CLUES OF IMPORTANCE".
The seeds are the keywords: meaningful words and phrases that are used to
research a specific subject.
The "Clues Of Importance" are the different locations of keyword
placement as well as the emphasis given to these keywords.
